To DM Again!

Tomorrow night (well, technically tonight) I have company coming over to the house…

Normally, this isn’t a huge deal. After all, people come over every Sunday to watch Game of Thrones, at least.

The great thing about tonight, however, is the purpose, which is to discuss my next D&D campaign. We’ll talk possible campaign themes, character ideas and concepts as well as the system we’ll be using… Pathfinder!

This will be my first time running Pathfinder (I have played a few times), and the first time I will have run a non-4e version of D&D since 4e was released. As I have said to a few of you, it shouldn’t be anything too crazy; after all, I have played and run every version of D&D. The idea of running a Pathfinder game is very exciting to me, but almost equally exciting is the fact that I have not DM’d a game since November of 2010, so I have had the DM twitch for some time now.

I am the kind of DM who, for the most part, does not like playing when a player can’t make it… even if it’s just one. I would rather hold off and make sure no one misses anything. In this case however, that will change. I intend on playing regardless (as long as we have at least a few) and will work it out in the game as best as possible… it may be wonky at times, but it’s that or we could end up with huge spaces between games which my body seems to be rejecting.

  1. Good luck with the game!

I haven’t done anything with 3.x since 4th dropped, save play a few computer games that use the older ruleset. I honestly find it hard to even spin my brain back into the 3.x mode of thought, though I know that I used to be capable of throwing together a 15th-level multiclassed monstrosity over lunch. I suppose I had the same reaction when I switched from 2e to 3 though.

Are you going to be bringing anything 4th edition (such as skill challenges, for instance) into your Pathfinder game?

    1. Yea, it seemed a little daunting at first when I was putting together my character in a PF game I am playing in (which just started recently), but it all started coming back pretty quickly. There were some new things to learn with PF that were not seen in 3.5, but they weren’t a big deal at all.

As far as bringing anything from 4e, I’m not sure just yet. Getting together today will be primarily about discussing possible themes for the campaign and character concepts, and of course going over some of the changes from 3.5 -> PF for those less familiar, but between this and my first game I will be considering those kinds of things. Anything I bring over, I am likely to discuss here though, hehe.

      Thanks for stopping in!

  2. I’m the say way when I DM! I hate when players miss a week’s session – I guess I just want us all there and like you said, I’d hate for anyone to miss anything cool.

I’ve never tried Pathfinder, and pretty much have stayed “current” with D&D’s latest edition and rules all my life. That said, I can see the appeal of older editions and different ones like Pathfinder and the AGE system of Dragon Age.
