Who I Am

I am Mike, aka “Weem”!

That was easy!

Me.

Okay, so Weem is a nickname given to me by friends based on the mispronouncing of my last name. My (very German) last name (Wiem holt) is correctly pronounced “Why”mholt, but is most often (mis)pronounced as “Weem”holt. So, they would call me Weemholt, but eventually it was shortened to Weem by one of them and, as it turns out, it stuck.

Table-Top Gaming

I was introduced to D&D when I was about 12 years old by my best friend. He told me he was playing this cool new game that his brother was running for him. D&D was not new then, of course (this was around 1988), but it was new to him. So I played my first game that day using the Basic Rules set (Red Box) and I was instantly hooked. I have always had a very vivid imagination, and I still remember visualizing my character and all the cool things he could do even while making him – we hadn’t even played yet!

I left his house that weekend enthralled with the game. I was so hooked in fact that my friend’s brother gave me those very books we had used, and I still have them today.

Graphic Design

The second major aspect of my life involves graphic (mostly web) design and development. I am the “Creative Director” at the company I work for, which mostly involves designing a lot of sites and building them out. I develop (or consult on the development of) our print and radio ads as well as with our clients regarding issues like marketing strategies using social media tools like Facebook, Twitter and more.

With this background, I tend to get involved in other peoples game-related websites as well.

For example, I created hundreds of forum avatar icons for IGN.com (VN Boards) a long while back, and as such ended up being a moderator there for a while (forum moderation being something I have done a lot of over many years in the RPG world as well). I also created the current EN World logo (10th Anniversary), as well as other graphics there related to the subscription service. As a fan of Mystara you can see some of my (very old now) work at the Official Mystara site, “Vaults of Pandius” – specifically the logo and the ship navigation menu (I really should offer something new to them now).

theWeem.com

I have been a member of the EN World community for a long time (since 2002), and though I rarely posted during the first 6-7 years or so, the last few have found me to be fairly active there. In fact, EN World was the place I used to post articles and various mashup images [Click here to see them on Facebook].

Over time, however, I found EN World to be a poor place for me to share the things I wanted to (not their fault, of course) as it was becoming hard to find them later. I needed one place to host everything so that I could simply point friends to one location. That is how “theweem.com” came into being during the Summer of 2010.

It was at that I time I began sharing my work not just with the community at EN World, but also on Twitter via the @theweem account. I already had a personal Twitter account, but decided this site should have its own account – one I could post 100% (or as close as possible) D&D related tweets, including tweets related to my various images which were largely D&D/Gaming focused.

Game Design

This Summer (2011) myself and a few friends/co-workers (also web developers) began developing our first video game. This was a game of my creation, and for which I have done all of the artwork and graphics. If you are familiar with games like Terraria, this will feel familiar to you, though there is much more to it! To learn more about it, please visit EpicInventor.com!
