Hey guys and gals,

I have a new Minecraft series (4 episodes live right now) following my re-introduction to actually playing (Survival mode) Minecraft. I’m looking to explore content I have not yet explored (enchanting, potions and more) having not played Survival mode in about one year. If you dig watching Minecraft series like these, consider checking mine out! Here is the first video in the series (I changed the logo/intro by episode 3)…

Hey all!

Forrest and I have just launched our very first Kickstarter project for our turn-tracking Initiative Tracker (web application) called… well, Track Initiative!

I’m supposed to use this opportunity to assail you will reasons why you should go and immediately help us fund this project. I should be using all of my powers of persuasion, and saying things like “We need your help!” (we do) and, “This project saves lives!” (it doesn’t). If I was doing this the “right” way, I would be asking you to tell all of your friends and to link to it everywhere you go…

…the thing is, while I certainly would appreciate all of those things, that’s just not my style. I appreciate that others can do it, and do it well, but I’m a no pressure kinda guy… convincing people to spend their money (especially on something of mine) is one of the least pleasant things for me to do.

That said, we’ve put together a Kickstarter project with a relatively modest goal ($2,000) so as to require the least amount of “salesy” pressure to successfully fund (while still covering the absolute necessities). Can’t help fund the project? We completely understand, really we do. Even if all you do is check out what we are doing, I would really appreciate it.

Here is a link to our Kickstarter. Please feel free to chat me up on Twitter and let me know what you think (whether you help fund it or not).

Thanks for your time, and your help, we truly appreciate it!

Unless you come here at least a few times a month, you will not likely notice it, but I have made some changes here on site last night and today. I wanted to take some time and explain why they were made because the reason for the changes has to do with a slight shift in focus of the site (sort of… more on that below)

The short story is that I will be posting video game related material here as well as my usual D&D related stuff. For more on this, please continue (if interested of course)…

Then

Little known fact: I made this logo!

The purpose of this site has been, since it was created in June 2010, to store all of my various D&D-related creations. Before I made this site, much of that content was being posted over on EN World in various forums etc. However, I found myself telling people, “Oh, let me show you this thing I made” and then heading to EN World to do a search for it (or in some cases simply searching Google for something like “enworld weem muleonomicon“).

Whether the content was articles that could be read, or accessories like cards or maps that could be downloaded, I wanted one place that I could go to when I needed to find something I made. It also made sharing those things with friends easier.

Not all of the content was D&D related, but most of it was. Occasionally I would post a video about a game, or talk about a video game like Minecraft, but this site has always been primarily about D&D.

Recently

Epic Inventor (PC/Mac/Linux)

As some of you know, I (along with a few others) began work on a video game of our own called “Epic Inventor” in the Summer of 2011. It was released in BETA form in December and has been doing very well.

I’ve always loved video games, but working on one has seen me playing even more and in fact last year I began recording some of my sessions for fun and posting them on YouTube. Over the course of these last 9-10 months, the demographic of those who follow my various accounts has changed a lot. Most people following my activities were doing so because it related to D&D, but I’m now rapidly approaching a 50/50 margin where there are almost as many people looking for video game related content from me. Whether that’s wanting to see my YouTube videos, or wanting more information about Epic Inventor, many of them have heard of D&D but never played it or know anything about it. Some had never heard of it until they saw me talk about it on Twitter or various forums.

Now

Instead of being D&D ONLY (essentially) I will now be posting video game related content here as well. Whether that’s actual videos of mine, videos others make or articles related to the topic, these will start showing up here now. D&D content will remain, and I will continue to be involved with it as much as I always have been, but the focus of this site will now allow me to cover both subjects.

The way I have always seen the site is is as a place for me to post my things. However, until recently, “my things” have always been D&D related – and since that is no longer the case, I needed to revamp things here a little to help with that goal. Under normal circumstances, I would expect to do what I want with my site, and that is still the case – but I want to give people a heads up is all. After all, a large number of people get content from this site via the RSS feed into things like Google Reader. In many cases, they may have done so with the (previously correct) impression that this is all D&D content. However, now they will begin to see video game footage and commentary along with D&D content, etc. For those people, I have a solution though…

Changes

Top: I always had Twitter, Facebook and RSS feeds up there but now I have an email link as well as a link to YouTube. Keep in mind that my YouTube channel is dedicated entirely to video games and gaming (no D&D stuff there).

Top – RSS: The RSS link now points to a page with some RSS options (instead of linking to the RSS of the entire site). If you were getting a feed here previously, you can how choose one type of feed (RPG or Video Games) so you can filter the other type of content out. There is of course the “Site” feed as well that will give you both, if you are interested.

Left Sidebar: On the left you will see some buttons. These are categories (RPG and Video Games) and some tags for some content types (Mashups, Downloads and Videos). I may add more, but for now you can click on any of those to get that kind of content specifically.

Still Here?

So in short, the focus of the site remains the same (a place to put my things), but what those things are is becoming a little more diversified is all. You will still see much D&D content from me, it’s just that there will also be some video game things in there as well – but I have provided some ways to filter out anything you may consider noise.

My Twitter activity will still be primary D&D related. I will post video game related things from time to time, but it will be mostly D&D related as usual.

Thanks for reading!

As some of you know, by day I am a web designer/developer for an IT/Web Development company. I’m the “Creative Director” there, which means I do anything from designing and building websites, to creating print material, ads and more.

One of the cool things about my job is that I work with a friend (also my boss) who is also a gamer. He doesn’t play as much D&D as I do, but he has played it a number of times and does enjoy it.

Recently, we decided to set aside one day a week to work on something for the company that is of our own creation (as opposed to, say, creating websites for other people). We chose Tuesday’s and two weeks ago we got together to brainstorm ideas. During this meeting, most of my ideas were D&D related (of course) and by the next Tuesday (last week), we decided on one of them…

What we have decided to do was to create a web application allowing you to track and manage initiative. Obviously this is nothing new, but we also were looking for a smaller project idea that we could complete pretty quickly. Additionally, we felt like we could bring some added functionality to such a tool.

Below are some of the features of this application. Once we have the Kickstarter… started, I’m hoping you will consider checking it out and maybe even help fund it! If you have questions about it, hit me up on Twitter @theweem or email me at weem@trackinitiative.com.

You can also check out the website at TrackInitiative.com and follow the Twitter account (@TrackInitiative) for any news/updates!

Features

Track the initiative order of all Players and other Combatants!

Players don’t need to register. Simply set up a combat, then share a custom generated URL for the Tracker with them, or anyone!

Drag and Drop to change initiative order, before and during combat – plus, quickly drag effects onto Combatants and decide when they trigger (start/end of turn) to remind the player!

Track Initiative is a web application compatible with both Windows and Mac, as well as iOS, Android and Blackberry mobile devices, perfect for games played online or at the table where Players have various devices!

Trackers always remember the last state they were in. Was your game interrupted? No problem! Simply revisit the custom URL at any time and pick up where you left off!

Easy to use interface

Customize It

Create and save effects like “Bleeding” or “Hampered” (or anything!) including selecting icons for them!

Create Players and other Combatants and save them for use later!

Create stat elements like “Armor”, attaching them to Combatants and assigning values to them.

Because you can create your own Effects and Stat Elements, Track Initiative can be used with any Tabletop game that incorporates turns/rounds!

While doing some research today and poking around my other websites, I ran into some scans of maps I had hand drawn (as I do all of my encounter maps) for my very first 4e encounters.

Anyway, as I recently did the revamped Caves of Chaos map, I currently have maps on the mind and thought I would quickly share these…

The first series are the first and second levels of a small series of tunnels carved into a thick rock wall separating two canyons. These maps (as you will see) have jagged lines seperating the various rooms and hallways. I wanted to lay these out using dungeon tiles from the board game “Descent” so I marked up the map based on those pieces. As the players moved through the cave, I pulled out the pieces and laid them out…

The second series is an encounter the PC’s would face later after tracking down some Kobolds from the first encounter…

It makes sense of course seeing as how the L&L poll put up today was about this subject. As such, my head was spinning with ideas today. Some were terrible, and others I just wasn’t sure of. As such, I’m going to present an idea here that may be okay, or could be terrible… I’m essentially just talking (or typing) out loud is all and this post is by no means an attempt to state what should be done.

Most of you reading this have a good enough understanding (if not years of experience) with what Vancian magic is so I won’t go into too much detail here. Simply put, it’s the idea that a spell caster must memorize his/her spells every day, the number available of which are limited to X amount per day, depending on the level.

One of the things people like about this system is that there is an inherent strategy involved for a spell-caster when he/she selects spells each day – some find this very enjoyable in fact. On the other hand, some people dislike the limitations – casters can quickly run out of magical tools and have to rely on means that they are not well suited for (crossbows, for example). There are a number of other pro’s and con’s to the system, but again – most of you are familiar with them so I don’t need to repeat them.

The word from Wizards of the Coast seems to be that we will see the Vancian system in the “next” version of D&D, but that somehow (we aren’t sure to what degree yet) there will be other ways to incorporate a different system (point-buy, or even using the 4e A/E/U/D system). You will have a choice it seems. Of course this made me think, “what if you combined some or all of these?“.

Combat vs Non-Combat

One of the things my brother didn’t like about 4e powers was that, for example, a character could have multiple combat abilities that allowed them to teleport (literally), but that he/she could not teleport outside of combat. I helped him with some ideas about how it could be explained, but it wasn’t enough for him. These kinds of things stuck out to me as well, but I could over-look them. In fact, in one campaign I actually allowed some of those kinds of things to be used by players outside of combat, so long as it was not abused and they gave a good description of what they were doing, etc.

Today’s discussion on magic, and my brother’s issue of a power having one purpose (combat) had me thinking that you could use the Vancian system of memorizing spells, but add in new “at-will” functions to most/all spells as well. I saw a number of people say today that, “I don’t like Vancian magic – but I could be fine with it as long as I have some at-wills to use too”, but this is not exactly what I’m talking about. In that scenario, some spells could be used at-will, and other (completely different) spells could not. What I’m talking about is looking at each spell and considering that it could have multiple functions, or purposes.

Multi-Functional Spells

With this idea, each spell would have a Primary purpose (ex: Damage, Utility) and a Secondary purpose, the secondary of which may or may not also have another special effect or benefit. Additionally, many spells would have some quick examples of “Tricks”, these being minor things a caster could do very easily because of their experience with said spell.

Finally, for times when a point-buy system is used, the Primary and Secondary purposes could also have a point cost (ignored by casters not using said method)

Let me give a few cases, using those examples above. In these examples “P” is for Primary, and “S” is for Secondary, and the bracketed [] number would display a cost for casters who use a point-buy system (numbers used are merely there as indicators)…

Fireball

Crude example of a "Fireball" (click to enlarge)

(P: Damage, S: Damage)

The Primary use [10] (one time use per memorization) of this spell would be the typical Fireball effect, putting out a lot of damage to a large area.
The Secondary use [4] (at-will) would cause a “moderate” amount of damage, and/or could have (for example) an increased range, or a blinding effect, etc.
Tricks: Ignite combustible materials, quickly warm a small room/area

Telekenisis:

(P: Utility, S: Damage)

The Primary use [8] (one time use per memorization) of this spell would be the typical Telekenisis effect, moving an object with your mind.
The Secondary use [4] (at-will) could allow you to fling objects for a “moderate” amount of damage, and/or could have (for example) an increased range (though lighter weight objects)
Tricks: Move multiple (tiny) objects without concentration

Water Breathing:

(P: Utility, S: Utility)

The Primary use [6] (one time use per memorization) of this spell would be the typical effect, allowing you to breath under water.
The Secondary use [2] (at-will) could allow you to swim at a faster rate than normal.
Tricks: None

UPDATE: To clarify: I imagined that the at-will “Secondary” uses of these spells would be available always, even if the Primary use had been used for the day.

It would likely need to clear that you can not employ the benefits from the Secondary purpose on top of the Primary purpose. In most cases, this would be obvious, but in the case of “Water Breathing” above, a player would likely want to breath underwater (Primary) but also move faster while down there (Secondary). In some cases this would not be that big of a deal, but it others it might – so for simplicity sake, it would be best to stick with keeping them separate (except in cases where the DM saw it to be fitting of course).

I liked this idea because it…

1) Uses the Vancian system of spell memorization and daily limitations (many people like this)
2) Provides the means for casters to have at-will spells (many people want this)
3) Includes point values for casters to refer to if they use a point-buy method (a method I’m guessing we will likely see as an option)
4) Connecting said at-will abilities to spells they have in ways that makes sense. You can cast a massive Fireball? It stands to reason you may have some other ways to manipulate fire, even if to a lesser “Secondary” degree as well as via small tricks (I think this is awesome, and it addresses my “teleport” dilemma from earlier)
5) You can incorporate the effects of many spells into others, which means you could cut down on the huge list of spells. For example, a Levitate spell might have a Secondary purpose of Feather Fall (makes sense, right?) so there’s no need to waste 2 slots (and in some cases, there wouldn’t be a reason to include certain spells in the game at all when they are already aspects of another spell, etc).

With all that said, there are likely any number of downsides to it or problems I am not thinking of. Again, I am just typing out loud here as it is coming to me.

A few notes

No Encounter abilities? As Kevin Kulp mentioned, he was not against Encounter powers, but rather was FOR simplicity, in which case Daily and At-Will seemed a good way to go – and I agree. My initial idea had encounters included, but when I think about how to track that info as well as relate that info visually, I can see the problem. Additionally, there’s only so much you can do with a spell so keeping it simple (2 uses) is nice and clean – a primary which we’re used to, with one additional purpose.

Reminds me a little of Psions augmenting their powers. When I thought of this, I was instantly reminded of the way Psionic powers worked in 4e. Psions could “augment” their power for better effects. This is similar in that it is one Spell (power, etc) that has more than one function, but in the case of the Psion, the effects were mostly the same only slightly better from a numbers point of view. In this case, we would be talking about changing the way something worked (Fire Spear vs Fireball) or even allowing it to do something completely different (breathing under water vs swimming faster).

Spells are not powers. In my teleport argument, it is clear that I am talking about powers or abilities as opposed to something that is memorized and immediately forgotten when cast. It could be argued I’m comparing apples to oranges. As such, it may seem like a stretch that a caster who memorizes and forgets Fireball every day should have any kind of fire manipulation abilities (via Secondary uses and Tricks in my examples) – but I don’t think it’s THAT big of a stretch and… well, I just think it’s damn cool!

Anyway, that’s about it. Forgive any typos or grammar issues as I jammed this out as quickly as possible. Please feel free to comment – let me know what you like and what you don’t… what might be awesome, and what would totally fail.

As always, thanks for reading!

I have not said much about what I want to see from the next iteration of D&D. I’m pretty content to wait and see a little more info for the most part (my opinion most of the time seems to match the masses anyway it seems), but I was struck with an idea tonight and thought I would post it here. What follows is just an idea. It could be bad, it may not even make sense (it’s 2am now), but it is what it is – something I think would be cool.

Back when I was a kid, we played using the Rules Cyclopedia. When we made characters, our goals were Immortality. Yes, for those unfamiliar there were rules for attaining Immortality and even what to do once you got there!

Wrath of the Immortals - Jeff Easley

There were 4 “paths” to Immortality. They mentioned things like tracking down and bringing about the “permanent destruction of an artifact of the Sphere of Entropy”, which was one part of the “Epic Hero” path. The “Dynast” path contained the task that the character “must found a dynasty” and that it must be ruled by the character and his/her descendants for at least 20 years. If that sounds like a long time, don’t worry because another aspect of this is that the character must find an artifact that allows time travel and use it to ensure that in three different periods in the future, they his/her descendants retain their kingdoms and perpetuate the dynasty.

In today’s “L&L” article, “The Challenge of High Level Play” by Monte Cook, he talks about (primarily) the “breakdown” in high level play that some experience (perceived or not). However, it was something in one of the polls that got me thinking about this high level play even more. One of them essentially asked if you thought “High level is just low level with bigger numbers“. I immediately thought, “it seems like it to me now, but I don’t want it to be”.

Ascend or die.

As a hero, or a hero in the making, I used to think of my characters’ life as a window of opportunity for greatness that was steadily closing and if I was not quick enough, I could miss my shot at greatness. I was either going to make my mark on this world so that future characters of mine (and other players) would always remember him, or I was going to damn well die trying. Don’t get me wrong, there was more to it than something as noble as that sounds… I also wanted the power of Immortality. I wanted a taste of the power that was moving the chess pieces of this world within which I lived.

Back then our characters were just vessels. They were a means to an end, and we quickly discarded them if we had the chance to ascend to Godhood or Immortality. I want this again.

Fearing the unknown

Considering the proposed modularity of the next iteration of D&D, I feel like we have a great opportunity to bring back some of this feel. The separation of the very powerful from mere mortals is something that (in my opinion) requires a separation of rules. The Gods do not play by the same rules as mortals, so why should they have the same character sheets.

Lady of Pain - Tony DiTerlizzi

Back in 2001 or so, I interviewed David “Zeb” Cook (of Planescape fame, among other things). In the interview, I asked him if he thought WotC might ever release anything about the Lady of Pain – her stat block for example. His answer was…

…While I can’t predict what WotC might do, I’ll hazard a guess — nothing. Certainly if it were my choice that’s the way it would be. The point about the Lady of Pain is that she isn’t really anything (except maybe an convenient embodiment of DM law) which lets her be anything. The minute something gets quantified, it loses it’s “reality” and becomes nothing but a game mechanic…

He was exactly right. As soon as we quantify a being of such power, you loose the sense of power all together. I don’t even care if her hit points (for example) were in the tens of thousands, it still would indicate that she is just like us – only it would take many more swings of a sword to hurt her. The less you know about her, the more powerful she becomes.

Of course, in order to PLAY such a powerful character, we sometimes need to quantify things…

Shed your skin… or character sheet

As all of this was coming to me, I started blurting out some thoughts on Twitter and by the time I was done, I decided I should write it out here. Let me put my first five tweets on the subject together to give you a feel for my idea…

Maybe at “epic” lvl, you make a new char using “epic” char creation rules w/your current char as a theme for the new one… So essentially, you could trade your character in for a theme in the “epic” character creation rules… Ex: I have a lvl 23 Juggernaut Warrior… which in the “epic” rules means I could trade him in for the “Storm Colossus” theme… You make your “epic” character using new rules and powers, and leave your old character (sheet) behind for a theme… There could be multiple themes available based on your class and some other pre-met requirements, and even some with no req’s.

Something like this could be easy to do in a modular environment. There could be an “Immortality” set of books (or a boxed set) that allows for these kinds of things. You could play without them and level up to 30 with all of the power that goes along with it, or grab this set and take that step to Immortality. Working on your path to Immortality could begin at any time, as long as it was clear what that entailed. For example, it could be that at level 14 you discover the path, and by level 26 your plans are finally completed. Maybe it takes less time – maybe you discover what your path will be at level 22 and complete it by level 28.

Once completed, you would then be ready to shed your mortal skin and leave this world behind. Not only could this be done symbolically in-game, but mechanically you could move into a new set of rules entirely. As my tweets mentioned, your character sheet could (for example) be used as a resource, allowing you to trade it in for a theme when creating your new character. This not only demonstrates a transfer of the personality of your “soul” from its mortal shell to its Immortal version, but it is helps ground it mechanically as well. This is a new being, but there is a connection to its past.

This idea also reminded me of an idea Monte Cook had put out when discussing having too many powers at later levels. The idea that you could trade in some powers for a more powerful power of a higher level. In this case you would be trading in a whole suite of powers/feats/skills for something much more powerful, but much less complex – a new base from which to build upon in the Immortal realm.

I am more than you, mortal

In my opinion, without separating the rules you can not effectively demonstrate the difference between playing a mortal and playing a God without ratcheting up numbers. I don’t want my Warrior to just get stronger. I want him to shed the “Strength” attribute entirely. As I said in another tweet later…

Strength? That means nothing compared to my “Presense”, which alone can move mountains… etc

by Lin Wenjun

It could seem strange that you might trade in your powerful warrior, a character who has some 20 abilities and powers, who has a sword that slays dragons, for a new character with 5 abilities (for example). After all, we would immediately stand our new being next to our previous Warrior and compare their power… But again, the rules would be different now…

…Most of those warrior abilities were about spitting out a ton of damage, but that means nothing compared to having a “Manipulation” power (for example) that allows you to alter the reality around you to various degrees… throwing hills with a flick of the wrist, or smashing bridges with a gaze… that’s ONE ability!

…What is all that “mortal” Armor Class when I now have a damage resistance of 200/mortal?

…What is that Strength of 25, when my strength is measured in how many mountains I can move?

…The Warrior conquered the Black Tower in a day and attained a powerful staff that shoots Fireballs? I’ve attracted 2,000 new followers in that time! Their chants echo through my halls rejuvenating me! When Za’Uradk, the Black Mane, came to my temple on a mission to slay my aspects and claim my power for his own, it was the voices of these followers that empowered me to slay 300 of his minions with one swing from my blade – a blade that would take your life if you looked upon it.

A few other ways to look at this…

…You have “experience” you earn? I have a “mortal connection” I want to deplete/disconnect from (which has mechanical consequences).

…You have “hit points” you want to protect? I have a “following” I NEED to maintain (which could also have mechanical consequences).

…You worry about “death”? I worry about being “forgotten” (again, this could also have mechanical consequences).

Conclusion

Obviously it could be argued that there is a difference between “high-level” play, and playing a God or Immortal. In fact, high-level play could (to you) mean level 20 or it could mean all the way to the end (level 30 for example). This article was meant to address an idea of making a distinction between the regular progression you see from level 1 up, and moving beyond that to something more powerful (and in my opinion, more meaningful) at some point near the end. Whether that actually means you are referred to as a God, an Immortal, or just a very powerful mortal is not as much of a concern for me. Rather, I think there should be a means (even if optional via a module) to break out of the “mortal” mold that helps illustrate what our characters are from a mechanical standpoint.

I don’t want my “epic” level/tier character sheet to look anything like my “mortal” character sheet. I want to move beyond the rules I had to play within up to that point. I don’t want to fight for me anymore, I want to fight for my following. I want to fight for my place in the stars/heavens/worlds. The rules used while “leveling” up to that point can’t handle the rules needed to meet these new goals. Rules attempting to make “Godlike” play work within that same environment would have to be hamstrung in order to maintain balance.

Don’t get me wrong, balance is great, but it is not needed (nor does it make sense) when comparing mortals to Gods/Immortals.

Thanks for reading!

I thought there might be some people interested in seeing the outcome, so here it is (scroll down to get the full-sized version and check out the book covers up close)…

So, this was another project spurred by something said on Twitter. Two nights ago Jerry LeNeave (@DreadGazeebo) asked the following via Twitter…

Anyone know where I can find a nice high-res copy / fan-recreated map of the Caves of Chaos (aka B2 KotB). The 20+ year old scan is meh #dnd

Well, I had been looking at the map myself recently and decided to do a quick check via Google – see if I couldn’t link him to something. At a glance I couldn’t find anything and I thought… maybe I should make one!

Last night I started, and tonight I finished (I spent about 8-9 hours on it). Some quick numbers: It is high res (300dpi), 17″ wide by 11″ tall (5100 pixels wide by 3300 tall). The Photoshop .PSD file is about 760 megs and has somewhere around 400 layers. The full-sized higres JPG itself is almost 17 megs.

I want to thank @chattydm, @eldritchreverie, and @merricb for glancing over it really quick a bit ago. It’s nice to have a fresh set of eyes to make sure there is nothing glaringly obvious that I overlooked.

Download Options

Please feel free to download this and use it as you wish (even print it) I would just ask you keep credit to me in the image, and point people to this page to download it (as opposed to linking directly to an image). Each size has 2 options. The first is the regular version, the second (“No Trees”) has had the tree overlay removed, incase they get in your way.

Great for gaming use…

Large – (JPG, ~700kb – slightly reduced quality – 1200×776)
Large, No Trees – (JPG, ~700kb – slightly reduced quality – 1200×776)
Large, “Player” Version* – (JPG, ~700kb – slightly reduced quality – 1200×776)

Good for printing…

HiRes – (JPG, ~4mb – full quality – 2500×1618)
HiRes, No Trees – (JPG, ~4mb – full quality – 2500×1618)
HiRes, “Player” Version* – (JPG, ~4mb – full quality – 2500×1618)

And finally, this one is overkill unless you intend on printing it poster size, but here it is…

Full – (JPG, ~17mb – full quality – 5100×3300)
Full, No Trees – (JPG, ~17mb – full quality – 5100×3300)
Full, “Player” Version* – (JPG, ~17mb – full quality – 5100×3300)

*The “Player” version of the map has no trees, secret doors, secret rooms, traps or room numbers.
