Dresden Files RPG, Day 1

Dresden Files
Dresden Files
Well, today is the day.

The players of my regular D&D campaign are coming over today to check out the Dresden Files RPG. I bought the books a few weeks ago, and have been going over them as I can. Last night in fact I made my very first character and was very pleased with the process and outcome. It’s making me wish someone could run a game for me, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon, so it’s best not to dwell.

One of the things I really like about this system is the way in which you can think of a theme for your character, or take a vision in your mind and make it happen. Other games allow you to do this with varying degrees of success, but this one did it well and the process itself was enjoyable. The character building process is even supposed to be a cooperative one which I think would have been even more fun, but I was flying solo with it last night.

Today, we’ll be talking about the system, and making characters. Even if these characters aren’t used in future games, I think getting to know the process is important in helping the players better understand the rules.

If they finish some characters before it’s too late, maybe I will throw something at them to beat down… or die to.

  1. We’re doing San Francisco – we live nearby – all of us have been there before (many times) etc etc. Everyone was really into that so it what we’re going with 😉

  2. EXCELLENT….

We must converse at length after Saturday. I too live about that far from SF (opposite direction saddly) and we too are about to start Dresden Files, centered there. Saturday will be our City/Character building session. It looks like we’ll have two of us trading off GM duties, so I will get to play, but if I’m going to be GMing the cross pollenation will be very helpful.

We’ve been doing some city building on a private Forum between games for a month now, and what we’ve agreed upon so for consists of:

The THEMES for the Campaign will be:
    1) The White Council is busy, *YOU* deal with it.
    – The Wardens aren’t around, and someone needs to police the lesser talents,
slay the sorcerer’s, get little girls past the bridge trolls, etc.

    2) Everybody’s working for somebody.
    – The gangs report the Tongs. The Tongs report to the Oni. The Oni report the
(Jade Court)Vampires. They say the Vampires report to the Golden One, and he reports to the Jade Emperor. No matter who you deal with, odds are good they’re just working for someone else.

This leaves one slot for the THREAT, which will change from “Book” to “Book”
with luck with will be per session, or at worst, Monthly.

    Some Potential Threats include:
Paranet members are dropping off the grid.
    Suddenly over-run with red court.
    *That* shouldn’t even be here!
Accords are in danger. Protect unlikely group of denizens.
    We’re partnering with *WHO*?!?!
Valuable path through Nevernever needs pruning.

  3. @Lord Bounty: Very cool! Looks great! I have some cool ideas, and have been thinking about putting a site together for it, but I don’t want to do too much until we determine if we can get something somewhat regular together.

I used to live closer to SF (I lived in the south and east bays – Cupertino, Campbell, Fremont, Union City, etc) so I have been to the city a number of times. I think it’s the perfect place for a game like this. It has so much history, and the atmosphere there, especially at night, can be kind of eerie.

  4. Yeah, many’s the time I’ve wandered back up Market, or over from Ghirardelli Square just as the sun sets, trying to get back into Dublin via BART, and the city has just shifted, like it’s waiting and watching you.

Initial discussion was to use the whole of Central Cali, but I was always pushing to center on the city.
